What are Sportraits?
If you're wondering what sportraits are, you're not alone. It's portraits for sports athletes, cleverly combined as SPORTRAITS. They usually consist of action shots (which everyone loves the most) as well as more traditionally posed photographs. Photos like these have been the norm for professional athletes for many decades but have eluded others. Not anymore! High School athletes are now relishing in the star treatment and get awesome photos of themselves in action at their respective sport. Gone, are the days of boring high school photos. Particularly popular for senior pictures, though, high school students of any age can get them. Even kids younger can get in on the fun. Not limited to just one sport either; football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, you name it.

The high school athlete
The high school athlete today is sophmore Luis Murrieta from Buena High School in Sierra Vista, Arizona. If you're wondering where he gets his good looks from, well, he is my nephew. I pitched the idea to him for these photos with great enthusiasm and he shared that enthusiasm, as most high schoolers today would, with a simple "Bet". A track and field athlete, his specialty is throwing the disk. Might I add, just a few days after our photoshoot, he had a track meet at Beuna High School. I delivered the images to him earlier in the day and he proceeded to throw a personal record with 71 feet. I'd like to think these photos got him fired up and helped with that... I'd like to think that at least.

The location: Veterans Memorial Park Sports Complex
Due to the spur of the moment nature of the shoot, and it being the weekend, I assumed we wouldn't have access to the amenities that Buena High School has to offer. Luckily in Sierra Vista, there's the new Veterans Memorial Park Sports Complex. An absurdly impressive complex that provides a football field, pickleball courts and a section for throwing the disk and shot. It also includes a track for runners and walkers alike. Open to the public, it was an easy choice for this sportrait session.
The photo session
We arrived at Veterans Memorial Park Sports Complex about an hour before sundown. With scattered clouds surrounding us, I knew we were set to get some dramatic skies. I exposed for the sky, drastically underexposing our athlete. Armed with three flashes however, two Godox ad400 pros and a Godox ad600 pro, making up for that underexposure was a piece of cake. I had him go through his throws a few times, ensuring I snapped the perfect frames and played with different angles. I showed him the straight out of camera results of each one. I got the approval any photographer would want to get from a fifteen year old boy: "Fire!"

Indoor portraits
Once done with the action photos, we packed up and headed indoors for portraits using one of my Savage Universal's backdrops with Buena High School's colors. When working with an athlete, whether it be a professional, a high school senior or even a pop warner athlete, it's important to always use their teams' color when adding color in. As if the photos weren't "fire" enough, I added some fog to give it an even more epic look.
